JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision and direction of the Director for Knowledge Management, Monitoring, Evaluation and Research, the Technical Advisor for Research and Learning will have responsibility for strengthening and growing research across the organization and making sure that evidence is used to support organizational learning and quality improvement of EngenderHealth programming. In this role, the Technical Advisor will lead the generation, synthesis and dissemination of high-quality evidence on EngenderHealth’s programmatic strategies, tools and approaches. The Technical Advisor will provide support for developing, implementing and disseminating results of research studies and evaluations; support capacity development for research and evaluation; develop and implement organizational standards and practices for research and evaluation; and support the development and implementation of organizational research and learning strategies. Finally, the Technical Advisor will contribute to global thought leadership in research on sexual and reproductive health.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead corporate initiatives to strengthen organizational research and develop organization research capacity, including on design, implementation, analysis and dissemination.

  • Lead the design implementation of high quality research and evaluation studies, including cross-organization evaluation of our programmatic tools and approaches.

  • Develop and implement strategies for organizational learning as regards EngenderHealth’s programmatic strategies, tools and approaches, and monitor their implementation, in collaboration with the Knowledge Management team.

  • Train EngenderHealth staff on research and evaluation tools and procedures, including developing new training materials as needed.

  • Lead development and publication of journal articles; support country programs in developing and publishing journal articles; build capacity of staff in writing and publishing journal articles.

  • Design and lead implementation of dissemination activities for findings of research and evaluation studies, and support country programs in the same.

  • Strengthen and lead organizational process for ethical and technical reviews of study protocols.

  • Contribute to proposal design; review of project reports; summarize and synthesize program results and evidence organizational tools, approaches and strategies.

  • Lead development of fundraising proposals for research studies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate degree in public health or related field; PhD preferred.

  • 8-10 years experience with reproductive health/family planning and international development issues; or PhD with 3-5 years.

  • Expertise in building research capacity or in training on research methodologies and research implementation.

  • Expertise in developing and implementing research studies in Africa and/or Asia.

  • A proven track record in research, including publications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong writing skills with ability to synthesize large amounts of information into succinct, readable reports and scientific publications.

  • Strong analytical skills; ability to design, lead and assist others to conduct secondary analysis of DHS and other data sets.

  • Excellent computer skills, with particular knowledge of statistical applications (e.g. SPSS, Stata, EpiInfo); experience working with qualitative software packages desirable

  • Exceptional interpersonal, teamwork and strategic-thinking skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • English required; French fluency strongly preferred.

  • Willingness to travel extensively internationally (up to 30% time).

  • Must be comfortable and respectful of EngenderHealth’s programming that promotes women’s rights, gender equality, sexual diversity and LGBTQ rights.
